• The single door node, in effect, is a stand alone access control system.
  • The door controller makes all the decisions for that door.
  • Below is a block diagram of the door controller, which explains the operation of each element:
Fig 3
Block structure of a Smart door controller.

Input & Output This provides the interface between external devices such as, card readers, exit buttons, door contacts & the locking device.
Communications The communications allows many smart door nodes to communicate on a single cable back to a PC.
Power Supply The PSU section provides all power for the electronics and one average D.C locking device.
Memory, Clock & Calendar The memory stores all details such as time, date, cards and set-up information specific to that door. Also stored in memory are the last 457 transactions (events) that have occurred.
  • It is important to understand the normal operation of a single door node. The logical operation is as follows:
  • A card or token is presented to one of the card readers, its electronic ID is sent to the door controller.
  • It is then compared against the door controller's memory for a match.
  • If there is a match the ID is then tested for validity of time & day against the clock/calendar.
  • Finally the door controller unlocks the door if both of the above results are true. The doors magnetic contact monitors the status of the door and posts a message to memory if it is held open after a programmable period. Finally the card number of the card just used is also stored in memory along with the current time & date.
  • This data is stored in the controller until the PC polls the door controller or 457 events occur, in which case it will be overwritten.
  • An event transaction is generated for any event that occurs :
    • 71 Access granted
    • 72 Access denied
    • 73 Egress
    • 74 Door forced (opened without card)
    • 75 Door held (open too long)
    • 76 Door closed (after alarm 74 or 75)
    • 77 Host opened door
    • 78 Host closed door
    • 79 Host granted access
    • 80 Intruder alarm set
    • 81 Intruder alarm unset
    • 82 Access denied Invalid Time Zone
    • 83 Access denied Card Suspended
    • 84 Access granted Holiday
    • 85 Access granted Alarm Zone set
    • 86 Access denied Alarm Zone set
    • 87 User Log In
    • 88 User Log Out
    • 89 User Access Denied
    • 90 Cold reset / watchdog
