Fig 1. Smart.net concept.

Smart.net PC based access control is a Distributed intelligence system.

Smart.net utilises a long distance RS485 network to connect doors together back to a computer.

Data can only travel along the network when the PC is switched on and the software is running.

Receiving Information from the Network

The computer software monitors events occurring at the doors by polling the network of door controllers.

The software will poll the each controller on the network every few seconds . First it polls controller 001, then 002 etc.

During each poll the software asks the controller if it has any transactions (event information) to send. If the controller does have some, they are collected and the software moves onto the next controller.

When the controller has communicated with the last controller, it waits for the polling interval (polling interval default is 5 seconds) and then repeats the poll.

Therefore every 5 seconds (plus the time it takes for communication) the computer screen will refresh and display the most recent events. Events are only displayed if the 'Main Event Window' is open.

Sending Information to the Network

The computer software sends new door, cardholder or time information to the door(s). It does this immediately that you change some data on the computer screen. It is critical that the door controllers are connected to the PC when changes are made.

Every time you launch the software the current date and time (as displayed by the Windows Operating System) is sent to ALL door controllers. This helps to synchronise the current time at the doors.

Distributed Intelligence
If the computer was off-line all doors will continue to operate correctly and independantly. This is because the door controller makes decisions locally. This is what is meant by distributed intelligence.

Software

The SRS Smart.net software is in fact a library file called SMARTLib.lbr and and EXE file called Omnis. When you launch the software (Smart Access Control - Start Menu) you actually launch Omnis and SMARTLib.lbr. SMARTLib.lbr is the arrangement of windows that allows you to view the data.

  • All computer files for Smart.net are held in a folder called Smart. The path is C:\Smart

  • Data

Data is all information held on computer which is specific to your installation. This includes:

      1. Doors
      2. Card Holders
      3. Time Zones
      4. Departments
      5. Site specific constants

The data is held in a file called Smart.df1. This is an Omnis Data File. You can ONLY view and ammend this data using the Smartlib.lbr software.
