Glossary of Terms

Serial port (Com1)

A standard RS232 connection terminal on a PC that allows bi-directional serial data communications at high speeds.

Twisted pair

Two conductors loosely twisted across there length to nullify interference.

Full duplex

Data can be transmitted and received at the same time.

ID

Unique ID or identification. A card or token has a unique factory programmed number or differ that is unique to the cardholder and is used to reference the said owner.

Event transactions

Events or Event transactions are time & date-based information, which explains who, or what happened at any given time. Every operation at a single door will generate at least one event transaction.

Door controller

A single piece of electronics containing a microprocessor, memory, clock/calendar & control relays.

Data

Information sent electrically down or up the network.

Off-line

A device (ie. PC or door controller) which is not connected to or not responding to the network.

Segment Screening

The use of separate screening anchors at every door controller. Doo not connect the screen on the data cable between the controllers

Distributed intelligence

Each door contains all the information it requires to operate as a self contained unit, clock/calendar, card numbers and event transactions that occur. A single door can be considered a mini access control system in its own right.

The PC plays no part in the decision process of whether to unlock a door or not.

RS485 network

A dual twisted pair with screen cable (Beldon 8723). It allows bi-directional data flow from the PC to each door. The maximum distance of any one network may be 1KM. One pair is for datat transmission and the other is for data received by the PC (Personal Computer)
